Mass-marketing crime existed long before the internet, but the internet has greatly increased this type of crime. Online dating romance scams often defraud victims of large sums of money. Why is this sociologically interesting?

Mass-marketing fraud exploits mass-communication techniques (e.g. email, instant messaging, bulk mailing, social networking sites and telemarketing) to con people out of money. This article summarises my research into one type of mass-marketing fraud — the online dating romance scam.
