Portrayals of prison life

How do the media represent prison life — and why is this important to both reformers and sociologists?

Ian Marsh shows here how much of our knowledge of the criminal justice system comes from the mass media. Understandably, a relatively small proportion of the population will have firsthand experience of this area, so the media play a very important part in shaping how people perceive the operations of the courts and the experience of imprisonment.

Marsh provides a brief look at the history of punishment, and then gives some interesting examples of the different ways in which the media have presented the experience of imprisonment. Perhaps surprisingly, the media are shown to influence not only the wider public but even some of those who work within the system.
