A fair and open society?

To what extent is social mobility determined by ability, education or family income — and why is it falling?

The following recent statement by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg captures two important points about social mobility in the UK:

The first point Clegg wants to stress is that equal opportunities matter to the government. An article from The Economist magazine back in 2006 suggested that most people would accept increasing inequality, with some people earning a lot more than others, if this went hand in hand with equality of opportunities, so that everyone had the chance to be one of those top earners.
