New approaches to social theory

Social theory sometimes confounds or intimidates students. We asked the author of a new short introductory book about sociology and social theory to take us through some of the key issues and new directions

FRANZ PFLUEGL/FOTOLIA

This article, in interview format, is of great importance to all sociology students, and repays careful reading. Gregor McLennan provides an interesting discussion on some key topics and issues — the nature of modernity, the relationship in sociology between theory and empirical research, science and objectivity in the social sciences, and post-feminism. He also introduces some new ‘classical thinkers’ — try searching the internet to find out more about their ideas. In addition, this article provides some reminders of the kinds of employment opportunities available to those with social science qualifications.

In Story of Sociology (McLennan 2011) I present a kind of personalised overview of the sociological tradition. In my experience students tend to struggle to really enthuse over ‘textbook’ sociology. I’m certainly not against textbooks — we need them — but I see mine as being complementary to the usual texts.
