An important figure in any debate about immigration is that of ‘net migration’ — that is, the difference between the number of people coming into a country and the number of people leaving. Currently, the UK is an area of net immigration, which means that more people enter the UK each year than leave.
The Conservative Party, aware of the concerns of many voters about immigration, have pledged to bring down the level of net migration to ‘tens of thousands’ before the next general election in 2015.
