In this article you are presented with a fascinating account of how photography can be used as a sociological research method and a way of presenting information. Caroline Knowles lists the different purposes to which photography can be put in sociology, and gives useful examples of each. The information in this article would be of great help when answering a question on sociological methods, particularly as photography is a method seldom discussed in textbooks.
Most visual sociologists work with photography, although at Goldsmiths College in London we encourage our sociology students to experiment with film, video, animation, installation and sound. They work the boundaries between sociology and art in developing visual commentaries exploring how society works. Art is obviously concerned with social issues and sociology has new awareness of the power of the visual in investigating and understanding the social world.
