Symbolic interactionism — and fashion

Dead White Men and Other Important People is a textbook that introduces students to sociological theories, such as symbolic interactionism. But it is also a novel about a young, female sociology student called Mila. Now read on.

Mila’s story can help you understand what the point of sociological theory is and it shows you how you can learn theory, use it and criticise it. In this specially written mini-chapter, Mila and two of her flatmates end up talking about symbolic interactionism.

Mila’s flatmate Tuni, who was studying art and design, was telling her friends about ‘fashion weeks’. ‘They are really exciting,’ she told them. ‘Fashion weeks are when the designers show all their new clothes. For women’s wear, the Autumn and Winter shows, they lump them together. They begin with New York in February. After New York come London, Milan and then Paris. It would be amazing to go to one of them.’
