Sociological theories are typically full of long complicated words that seem to bear little relation to the ‘real world’ that sociology is supposed to be telling us about. They are also full of arguments, with one group of sociologists saying one thing and another group saying more or less the opposite, making it hard to know what to believe.
The bad news is that there is no easy escape from theory — it can’t be avoided. To do well in sociology you have to know something about sociological theories. The good news is that it’s not really that difficult. Once you learn to think theoretically — that is, grasp what theory does in sociology — it will become a lot easier.
