The (next) end of the world?

On 13 November 2009, Sony Pictures released 2012, a film that explores the alleged ‘end of the world’. What can sociology tell us about why such beliefs persist for some people?

Much of the interest in 2012 comes from the New Age milieu.

The end of the world is not a new theme for Ronald Emmerich, the director of 2012. He also directed Independence Day (1996) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). As part of the publicity for this new movie, a fictional US government agency called the ‘Institute for Human Continuity’ (which in the movie exists to ensure the survival of the human race) has an internet site that encourages individuals to register for a chance to be ‘saved’ should the world end in disaster.

While all this might be a fun publicity stunt for an exciting movie, some people are actually worried that the world as we know it might end, or at least be radically transformed, in 2012.
