Documents comprise a wide range of research sources. They are varied in origin and in terms of public access. They can range from government papers open for public scrutiny to personal documents such as letters, diaries and other household paperwork (Scott 1990).
Personal diaries can provide a unique insight into someone’s life or into the life of a family or group. Anne Frank’s diary, for example, gave expression to the full range of human emotions experienced under extreme duress in the Second World War. It was found by her father some time after her death and has been used in a variety of ways to tell Frank’s story ever since.
