question and answer

A2 theory and methods

Laurence Gough/Fotolia

Sociological theory and research methods are central elements of any sociology course, both at A-level and beyond, and they are an important part of what gives sociology its distinctive character. A good grasp of theory and methods will help you make sense of any sociological work that you come across in the other topics you are studying, and enable you to see how different topics fit together.

Because theory and methods are so central to sociology, there is a compulsory essay question on them in Unit 4 of the AQA A2 examination. In this article, we are going to look at an example of a student answer to the theory and methods question from the AQA’s specimen paper for A2. Examiner commentary is included to help you identify good practice.
