The social impact of e-ICTs

Everyday life in the early twentyfirst century is increasingly shaped by electronic information and communications technologies — e-ICTs. We need to use longitudinal methods to measure the social effects of new technologies.

In common with previous ICT revolutions, different groups in society emphasise different potential impacts of new technologies on current ways of life:

■ Some groups focus on how the individual use of new media technologies can result in social isolation — although recent research suggests that electronic media technologies are increasingly used in social contexts and for social ends.
