Solutions to the problem of evil

Continuing our series of revision notes highlighting the key ideas of a topic, this article looks at solutions to the problem of evil proposed by the Augustinian and the Irenaean theodicies

■ ‘Either God cannot abolish evil, or he will not. If he cannot, he is not all-powerful, if he will not he is not all-good.’ (Augustine)

■ Augustine does not believe this to be true, but he sets out the problem as one that must be solved.
