The child witches of Nigeria

In the poorest parts of parts of Nigeria today, hundreds of young children are being tortured, mutilated and often murdered because, it is claimed, they are ‘child witches’ who have used their evil powers to bring about misfortune to others. There are reports of children as young as 5 years old being rejected by their parents, cast out of their homes and being cut with knives, thrown onto fires or having acid thrown over them to force them to confess to being witches.

At the root of the problem is the extreme poverty and hunger of the poor. A growing number of priests and pastors charge desperate people huge sums of money to ‘deliver’ their children from the evil of witchcraft which, they claim, is the cause of the poverty:
