The Bahá’í faith dates from the nineteenth century, originating in Persia (now Iran). The Bahá’í calendar began in 1844 and the founder of the faith, Bahá’u’lláh, announced it as a religion in 1863. Most of the early Bahá’í followers were Muslims who converted.
The Bahá’í faith is the second most widespread of the world’s religions after Christianity and has over 5 million followers in 235 countries and territories. The largest communities are now in India, the USA, Iran and Vietnam. The Bahá’í World Centre is at Haifa in Israel, the place where Bahá’u’lláh was exiled in 1868 and where he died in 1892.
