AQA special

Unit 4 Religion and human experience

David Kendall looks at how to tackle this final A2 exam paper.

Unit 4 (Religion and human experience) is the most difficult of the four papers you will sit for A-level religious studies, for a number of reasons.

First, it is an A2 paper and the level descriptors at A2 are more demanding than those at AS. For AO1 answers, you are expected to present ‘a thorough treatment of the topic’ and ‘information (must be) accurate and relevant’ (taken from AO1 Level 7 of the AS level descriptors) at AS. At A2 there is an additional element that needs to be clearly stated in your answers, which is ‘good knowledge and understanding of diversity of views and/or scholarly opinion’ (taken form AO1 Level 7 of the A2 level descriptors). Again when it comes to AO2 the phraseology of the Level descriptors is a step up from AS: ‘Systematic analysis and reasoning leads to appropriate conclusions. There may be evidence of independent thought’ (taken from AO2 Level 7 of the A2 level descriptors).
