The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

How do you think the world will end? The last book of the Bible is the Book of Revelation, and it is a terrifying vision of the end, known as the ‘apocalypse’. The vision is said to have been given by God to John of Patmos and shows that the last days will be marked by pain, suffering and death. Revelation shows the coming of the end with a graphic vision of beings known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who will be released by God to bring in the last days. Revelation 6 tells us what will happen.

It begins in heaven, where the Lamb of God (possibly a reference to Christ) opens the first of seven seals and a white horse emerges: ‘“Come!” I looked and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest’ (Rev. 6:2). The rider of the first horse is described as the ‘Word of God’ (Rev. 19:13), which scholars take to be Jesus Christ himself. His horse is a symbol of conquest.
