In modern times, many philosophical and ethical issues which have great significance to religious believers have come under fierce scrutiny from the challenges posed by new developments in philosophy and science. The conflict between the traditional and the new is a fertile breeding ground for the proliferation of many ideologies, some of which attempt to combine old and new, some to preserve the old, and others to discard it completely. For the religious believer, who seeks to hold on to what they consider to be of ultimate value, the challenge is a rigorous one. One issue that has dominated religious scholarship since the enlightenment is the question of the authority of scripture and its status as an inspired work.
