OCR: Core studies: Extended questions

This article considers the highest-weighted question you might be faced with in the AS/A-level exam on Paper 2 Section B: Areas, perspectives and debates. These extended-response questions have been highlighted as particular areas for improvement by examiners on the OCR ‘Report to centres’. The take-home message was that students often do not provide a comprehensive enough explanation for the issues raised, often relying on their knowledge of the core studies.

One key thing to remember for Paper 2 Section B of the exam is that it is focused on the areas, perspectives, issues and debates — the core studies should only be referenced if they are specified in the question. Typically, the extended-response question arises in two different formats:
