Let us start with a game of ‘Spot the difference’. Can you spot and explain the difference between the following two scenarios?

■ Scenario 1: My 5-year-old son is driving toy cars around the roads on his play mat while I am reading to him. My husband enters the room and asks how he can be both listening to the story and playing at the same time. To demonstrate that my son is following the story, I ask him a comprehension question, which he can answer.
