MATT’S MATHS

Simple probability

Matt Jarvis helps demystify the mathematical requirements for A-level psychology. In this issue, Matt discusses probability

Probability plays a vital role in our everyday lives, whether we are aware of it or not. Probability is a fundamental concept in mathematics that helps us understand the likelihood of an event occurring. Whether you are flipping a coin or rolling dice or, more critically, deciding whether to cross a busy road or deciding whether to try eating the raw Japanese fish that occasionally causes death, understanding probability is essential to making informed decisions. Understanding probability might save your life!

One of the simplest forms of probability is the likelihood of an event occurring when there are two possible outcomes. For example, when you toss a coin, the probability of getting heads is 1 out of 2, or 50%. This means that if you were to toss a coin 100 times, you would expect in theory to get heads 50 times and tails 50 times.
