At this moment you may be feeling stressed by the pressures of your A-level studies. Positive psychology may help. It involves studying human wellbeing, identifying and promoting factors that contribute to a fulfilling life. Positive psychology researchers investigate a wide range of topics, including positive emotions, character strengths, personal values, relationships, work satisfaction and resilience.

The positive approach shares many similarities with the humanistic approach, as they both focus on personal growth and self-actualisation, and emphasise the importance of subjective experience and free will. While positive psychology is more empirical (scientific) and practical in its approach, humanistic psychology is more theoretical in nature. See Box 1 for an illustration of the scientific basis for positive psychology.
