You may well enjoy dancing at a nightclub, or moshing to guitar music might be more your thing, or perhaps you prefer ballet or ballroom. Whatever your stylistic preference the good news is that dancing is good for your mental health and wellbeing. The even better news is that psychologists have incorporated dance into psychological therapies. This can be done in various ways using a range of dance styles.
Dauda Salihu and colleagues (2021) carried out a review and meta-analysis of studies into the effectiveness of dancing interventions for treating depression, anxiety and stress. They found 28 studies of sufficient quality published between 2010 and 2021. Combined, these studies included 2,249 participants. It was concluded that dancing was of considerable benefit (different studies defined ‘benefit’ in different ways).
