The Section C of Component 1 (Data analysis and interpretation) poses a big challenge for A- and AS-level OCR students. This is the section where students leave the most questions unanswered. This is a very serious omission because Section C is worth 35 marks (25 at AS), which is the equivalent of one grade. Possibly the reason why students leave questions unanswered is because they run out of time, but the more likely reason is that many students have an irrational fear of inferential tests. This fear leads to self-doubt and becomes a selffulfilling prophecy.

A change of mindset and spending time on practice can transform performance in this section. We’ll come to the change of mindset later but in terms of investing time, you should make the effort to look at as many past papers you can, in conjunction with mark schemes and examiners’ reports.
