A key skill to conquer in preparation for the exam is essay writing. Essays can be worth 8, 12, 16 or 20 marks, and the marks for all the essays added together make up over 60% of the exams. This highlights the importance of knowing how to write a good essay.

All the essays, whatever the command word, give marks for knowledge and understanding (AO1). This could be a description of a study, theory, research method or key question. The key criterion is ‘detail’ — to reach the top marks for knowledge and understanding (AO1) what you write must also be ‘thorough and accurate’. You can group all your description together at the beginning of the essay or you can disperse it throughout, embedding it in the application/evaluation points.
