Explaining Milgram

Cara Flanagan provides some exam-based advice to support Jason Turowetz and Matthew Hollander’s exploration of Milgram’s results

It is important to distinguish between exam questions that focus on Milgram’s findings and those focused on explaining obedience to authority. Turowetz and Hollander are concerned with the latter topic, and offer two useful evaluation points: 1 obedience is best explained by multiple factors not one single explanation; 2 they propose a new explanation — ‘doing being ordinary’. The article also provides a useful opportunity to reflect on both thematic analysis (identifying the different explanations/themes) and content analysis (counting the occurrence of the themes).

Describe and evaluate one or more explanations of obedience. (10 or 16 marks) (AQA AS-/A-level)
