When I launched the UCAS personal statement writing process with my Year 13s, I thought it might be a good idea to write a PSYCHOLOGY REVIEW article on that topic: how to write a killer personal statement. Feeling inspired, I started preparing what I would write. I jotted down ideas. I contacted colleagues for advice. I started writing the article. And then I hit a wall. I didn’t feel that my article was very engaging. So I shelved it, thinking I’d come back to it when inspiration hit. I kept putting off writing it because I couldn’t make it work.
Ironically, I found myself in the same position many students face when writing their personal statement. I knew what I wanted to include. I’d made a few attempts. I’d procrastinated and was now facing a deadline and feeling a bit panicked.
