Attachment types

Mary Ainsworth used the Strange Situation technique to assess attachment type. She tested a number of key aspects of attachment behaviour, specifically testing how the babies behaved in terms of the four criteria shown in the table below.

The Strange Situation technique was designed for children under the age of 1, but other techniques have been used to assess attachment type in older children and adults.
