CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Complete these activities to check and extend your understanding of risk-taking at mass gatherings

1 In this article, Rathbone and Cruwys define health behaviours and also risk behaviours and give examples of each. Can you give two or three other examples of each that may also lead to either physical or psychological harm?

2 The authors go on to outline psychological factors that might predict risk behaviours in the context of mass gatherings (for example, personality traits such as impulsivity and sensation-seeking, or social influence factors such as conformity). Do you consider personality factors to be more important here than social influence factors or vice versa? Use studies you have learned in psychology (for example, conformity, resistance to social influence) to support your arguments.
