CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Complete these activities to check and extend your understanding of the ideas discussed in Shona Herron’s article on ‘Depression’

1 In her article, Herron outlines how the causes of mental health problems have changed dramatically over time. She writes ‘the explanations we give about why someone is distressed has implications for the treatments offered’. Can you give some examples of these implications? Name two or more explanations and explain what they imply for treatments.

2 Herron suggests that, while the label ‘depression’ is relatively new, similar conditions can be traced back to around 400 bc when the term ‘melancholia’ was used by the Greek philosopher Hippocrates. How have advances in psychology in the intervening years changed our understanding of the causes and treatments of this mental disorder? (For example, think of the role of neurotransmitters.)
