I believe that it is time to abandon psychiatric diagnosis. When the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was released in 2013 there were many devastating criticisms, including an admission from the chair of the DSM IV committee that ‘there is no reason to believe that DSM-5 is safe or scientifically sound’ (Frances 2013).
In this article I am going to briefly summarise two alternative approaches to psychiatric diagnosis and then focus on a third approach: the Power Threat Meaning Framework.
