One explanation for adult mental (and physical) health problems is the idea that ‘toxic stress’ (repeated stress which overwhelms the individual’s coping ability) has a negative impact on the developing brain and body in childhood. Heightened stress responses from early life may thus continue into adulthood, affecting the person’s mental state. This idea is at the heart of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
