Iwill never forget the words of panic from one of my A-level students after her psychology exam — ‘Miss, I wrote the wrong 16-mark essay!’ This student had an impeccable work ethic and a sound understanding of psychology. However, due to exam pressure, she sometimes rushed into answering questions without analysing what was actually required. The result was just writing down everything she could remember in her exam answer.
Rather frustratingly for her, all of what she had written was correct but she had not supplied the information requested. In this particular instance, she had written about the biological explanation of OCD, when the question required the biological treatment of OCD. Misreading one word can make a big difference — in this case, 16 marks worth of a difference.
