The idea that we might be seeing something that isn’t there or hearing something that nobody else seems to hear can be very frightening and is often seen as a sign of madness. The truth is very different and hallucinations are part of everyday life and can be very useful. Sure, they can also be a sign of something more generally wrong with our perception of the world, but on the whole we don’t need to fear them.
In this piece I’m going to suggest to you that hallucinations are common in everyday life and are probably very useful in helping us make sense of the world. Sometimes they can be unpleasant but if we recognise them for what they are then we can deal with them without fear.
