Tom Buxton-Cope explores two student responses to a research methods exam question and uses a mark scheme to assess them

When we think about questions on research methods, we usually think of shorter answer questions worth somewhere between 1 and 6 marks. Indeed, these are the most common questions on this topic. However, as the research methods section of A-level Paper 2 is a double-section worth 48 marks, there is often room for an extended question worth 9 or even 12 marks. This is similar in marks to some essay questions in other topic areas. These extended research methods questions tend to ask you to explain how you would design a suitable study to investigate a given research question.
