Have you ever noticed that if you bend over and look at people from between your legs then their faces look really weird? No? You haven’t lived. If you have, then you will be interested in this.
In 1980 a psychology professor, Peter Thompson, was preparing a teaching session for an electronics class (it’s a long story) and wanted to create an example of an illusion he was interested in. He needed a photograph of a face and so when passing the local Conservative club he popped in and asked for a spare couple of posters of the then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. He cut out the eyes and mouth on the picture and was going to just displace them to create the illusion, but by chance they were rotated through 180 degrees and in so doing he discovered an illusion which has puzzled and delighted psychologists ever since.
