It is a strange fact of modern life that some objects are prone to go missing. Socks are a good example and most of us have odd socks which have lost their partner. Teaspoons are another. There never seem to be enough of them.
Megan Lim and her associates decided to investigate these puzzling disappearances. In their research institute, which had 140 workers, they secretly numbered 70 teaspoons and observed them over a period of 5 months. They found that 56 (80%) of the teaspoons disappeared over the 5 months. Some of estimated that 18 million teaspoons are going missing every year. They proposed that this was best explained by there being a planet somewhere the teaspoons were more expensive than the others but this did not have an effect on the rate of loss.
