Is addiction uniquely human?

This article originates from a friendly e-mail dispute between me and a colleague, Dr Serge Ahmed of the University of Bordeaux. In a book he recently co-edited, Serge wrote a chapter (Ahmed 2018) that gives a fascinating history of ‘animal models’ of addiction — i.e. research set-ups involving nonhuman animals, such as chimpanzees, monkeys and rats, designed to throw light on the nature of addiction in humans.
