How to communicate with your examiner

Sarah K. Thompson explains why making a positive impression on your examiner is a good idea

One very important aspect of exams is often neglected in the desperate scramble to revise and cram. This is the fact that an exam is a communication between the candidate and the examiner. In order to gain the highest grade possible, you should spare a thought for the person who is going to be reading your paper. In this article, we will take a look at who the examiner is, and how you can display your knowledge and understanding to them in the most effective way.

Enter the psychology examiner. He or she is an experienced psychology teacher, just like yours, who will probably mark thousands of exam answers during the summer after receiving extensive training on applying the mark scheme for one particular exam paper. Many of the answers will be read by more than one examiner, to check consistency. Most papers are marked online, and the examiner sees one question at a time.
