M ost parents want their children to grow up to be polite, kind and helpful. How many times do we hear parents and caregivers telling their children to share, or asking them ‘what’s the magic word?’, for example? But what if there were more enjoyable ways of encouraging children to be kind?
A research team in Canada (Cirelli et al. 2014) decided to study whether getting an infant to dance in time with an adult increases the chances of them offering the adult help afterwards. To test this, an assistant held and gently bounced a 14-month-old infant to music while facing the experimenter, who also bounced to the music in synchrony.
