Algebra is an important part of maths, first developed at least 4,000 years ago by the ancient Babylonians. Much of modern algebra owes a lot to Arabic scholars writing just over a thousand years ago. The defining feature of algebra is the use of symbols to represent numbers and rules for handling them. These symbols allow us to write about numbers and the relationships between them much more concisely than we could by writing them out in the form of words. Algebra can be very complex, but what you need to understand for A-level psychology is fairly straightforward.
Your specification lists some algebraic symbols, which you will need to be able to explain and use. The symbols in Table 1 are included in all A-level specifications.
