Comparing and contrasting approaches

Katherine Cox focuses on the mark scheme and techniques for maximising success in comparison questions

The specification for both WJEC and WJEC Eduqas requires you to ‘evaluate the approach (including strengths, weaknesses and comparison with the four other approaches)’. Therefore you can be asked to directly compare and contrast two of the five approaches you have studied. Answering these questions requires a particular set of skills, not just knowledge of the approaches.

A good place to start is to try to compare two objects such as an iPhone and an Android phone. Think about what is similar and what is different and write a paragraph to compare them. Then look at the language you used to do this. It will probably have included phrases like:
