Magic and memory

The Indian rope trick

The crowd stare with a mixture of shock and horror. A magician has thrown a rope into the air and caused it to become rigid. A small boy then climbs up it and disappears at the top. The magician follows with a sword, and hacks at the air, sending body parts falling to the ground. He climbs down, places them in a basket and the boy reappears miraculously unscathed.

At least, that’s what numerous people have recalled seeing over the years. There’s only one problem: the trick probably never happened. Psychologists, including Richard Wiseman, have found no evidence that it was ever performed like that in reality.
