By now, you may not remember the name Aylan Kurdi. But you will recall the picture of the little boy, fleeing Syria, who lay lifeless on a Turkish beach. In the years and months before Aylan’s death, attitudes to migrants were overwhelmingly negative. Some ten times as many people wanted migrant numbers reduced as wanted the numbers increased. After Aylan’s death, there were unprecedented outpourings of solidarity with those fleeing war and conflict. A petition calling on parliament to offer more support was signed by over 400,000 people. Demonstrations of support were organised around the UK. Convoys of aid were oversubscribed, often by a factor of ten or more.
