The man with no memory

Suzanne Corkin was one of the researchers who knew H.M. best. She recalls her research

Henry Molaison

I first met Henry Molaison more than a half century ago (1962). It was during the spring of my third year in graduate school at McGill University when I was working in Brenda Milner’s laboratory at the Montreal Neurological Institute. I have tried to resurrect the details of my interactions with him that week, but human memory does not grant us such excursions. The small details of unique episodes fade as time passes, which makes it difficult if not impossible for us to vividly re-experience the details of events in the distant past.

What I do know is that I was very excited to have the opportunity to study such a rare case as Henry. Along with the other researchers in Milner’s lab I had spent months preparing test materials for his visit.
