The changing face of nostalgia

We have all experienced strong emotion when thinking about the past — known as nostalgia. Psychologists have asked various questions about this experience: How should nostalgia be conceptualised? Is it a positive experience? What psychological functions does it serve?

Nostalgia is ‘a strand in the fabric of everyday life’ (Wildschut et al. 2006, p. 982) with 79% of undergraduates experiencing nostalgia at least once a week and 42% indicating they experience nostalgia at least three or four times a week.
