Exam questions try to focus on skills over content. One such skill that is commonly underestimated and misunderstood is that of evaluation, which contributes about 30% to the total AS and A-level marks. It is a skill that students need to develop if they hope to be successful.
‘Good’ evaluation should be ‘sophisticated and articulate’, ‘well developed and balanced’ and ‘contextualised’. It should include ‘well-chosen examples’ and ‘definite links to psychological concepts/real life’. These are all features of top-band mark schemes. But what does this actually look like in practice?
