Drinking alcohol has an effect on people. That’s why they drink it. One of these effects is called beer goggles and refers to the observation that when people have had a couple of beers they start to find people attractive who they previously did not find attractive. The beer affects our judgement of other people, but does it also affect judgements of ourselves? In short, yes it does.
A study by Bègue and colleagues in 2012 looked at how people rated themselves when they believed that they were under the influence of alcohol. They were asked to make a speech after having a drink and the people who thought they had drunk alcohol rated themselves to be funnier, brighter and more attractive than those who did not think they had drunk alcohol. Independent judges rated the speeches and found no difference in performance.
