Recently an apparently horrendous picture appeared on Twitter showing hundreds of cats pinned to laborator y benches while about 20 people in surgical scrubs and masks operated on them. The picture was retweeted many thousand times with comments such as ‘Say no to animal testing’, and ‘This picture makes me want to throw up.’ You can see the picture here: www.tinyurl.com/km3my7y.
In fact, the photo first appeared in 2010 in a local Florida newspaper. The cats had been found — 697 of them — at a supposed sanctuary for unwanted felines. Several were very sick and had to be put down. The picture shows 300 of them undergoing emergency operations to spay them so they could be released to new homes.
