Being a criminal

Nature or nurture?

Criminologist David Wilson discusses crime with career criminal Noel ‘Razor’ Smith

David Wilson

Noel ‘Razor’ Smith is a journalist and the Sunday Times bestselling author of A Few Kind Words and a Loaded Gun (2004) and A Rusty Gun (2010). He now writes for the prison newspaper Inside Time. He was also a career criminal who spent the best part of 32 years in and out of jail.

And it was in jail that I first met Noel, albeit from different sides of the bars. We make an ‘odd couple’. I’m Cambridge educated and have a PhD; Noel was excluded from school and a regular truant. As a prison governor I represented authority. Noel, on the other hand, spent most of his life rebelling against those who had any power over him.
